One thing I think I need to clarify before we begin is that in order to play rugby you have to be both extremely competitive and extremely smart. It is both a very physical and mental sport that requires all of you at all times. So naturally, we took this approach to the Vermonster challenge.. Proof of this lies in emails sent out by returning players on how best to eat ice cream quickly and efficiently as well as how to prevent brain freezes. For any future Vermonster undertakings here are some tips:
- Bring a hot drink with you to use in between every couple of bites. From experience, I can tell you this worked wonders.
- Use two spoons if you think you can handle it.
- Eat with your mouth closed to avoid brain freeze
- Eat little meals throughout the day to keep your metabolism going and work out at some point about 5 hours before the competition to make you even more ravenous.
We arrived an hour early and sat waiting and some of us bouncing up and down with excitement (holly). Of course, with all this extra time on our hands we ended up coming up with a brilliant strategy. We divided into two groups: one standing and one sitting so everyone could be eating at the same time. We also quickly went to starbucks and sneakily ordered 3 vendi cups of hot water and divided each cup into little cups and assigned a spectator from our team to be “water girl”. In order to not waste any time talking, we made raising your hand the signal for the need for a shot of hot water. Then we realized that we needed a spoon for each hand (Don’t worry, i brought one of the serving spoons mom gave me for college so i was basically using a mini shovel). Now we were ready. Slowly as the time for the competition arrived three other teams showed up. This barely phased us. Here is a before picture where we are already holding up number one and our spoons! And now the competition began. Some of the next three minutes after the beginning of the competition is documented below… ps we ate it in less than three minutes.
At one point, icecream got on the table.. but we just went with the flow and used our spoons to scoop it back up! Also, by the end of this we were all covered in random places with ice cream. I think my shirt had about 5 or 6 spots on the back that I definitely could not have done myself. Basically, we were way too focused on completing the task before us, we forgot about the fact that ice cream was getting all over us.
At the very end, we all put our hands in and did our “PRIDE!” cheer to the shock of the other teams. I don’t think anyone believed we ate it so fast. They let us keep the bucket as a souvenir! Afterwards, some of us were still hungry (believe it or not) and went and got pizza. Within an hour of eating dinner, we then had to go to practice.. fortunately no fitness resulted in no puking!
